an exclusive masterclass
“Benvenuti in Lomellina” returns in 2026 — the annual event celebrating one of Lombardy’s most distinctive agricultural territories.
Organized with the support of GAL Risorsa Lomellina — the Local Action Group committed to rural development, sustainability, innovation, and the promotion of local excellence — the event continues to grow in popularity, attracting visitors, enthusiasts, and curious travelers eager to discover an authentic land where rice is not only a product of excellence, but also a true cultural and historical symbol.
Adding to the experience, as tradition now dictates, is the journey aboard a charming historic steam train departing from Milan Central Station.
More than simple transportation, the train ride becomes an integral part of the event itself: the slow journey through the flooded rice fields offers breathtaking views and recreates the atmosphere of another era, giving participants a privileged perspective over the Lomellina landscape.
This year, the train will bring visitors to Robbio (Pavia), a village rich in Romanesque heritage and the ideal starting point for experiencing the event’s activities. Guests may also bring their bicycles free of charge thanks to a dedicated bike carriage.
Six itineraries to discover Lomellina
The fifth edition stands out for the variety of experiences offered: six guided itineraries designed to tell the story of Lomellina through agricultural, cultural, and human perspectives.
Among the most engaging is undoubtedly Itinerary 1 – “The Via Francigena of Lomellina Rice”, carefully curated by Stefania Buffa Riso, who plays an active role in promoting the territory and creating authentic experiences connected to the rice-growing world.
This itinerary is conceived as a true “slow day” — an invitation to slow down and reconnect with the rhythms of the countryside.
Following the ancient paths of the Via Francigena, the experience unfolds among rice fields, nature, and agricultural culture, offering an authentic insight into one of the region’s most iconic products.
At the heart of the experience is a guided 3 km walk through the flooded rice paddies, entirely flat and accessible.
Participants are accompanied by Stefania Buffa and Luca Sormani, both agronomists, together with local volunteer guides who explain, step by step, the rice production cycle behind the rice we eat every day, the fundamental role of water, and the sustainable agricultural practices adopted today.
It is a direct and authentic storytelling experience lived in the field itself — allowing visitors to truly understand what rice production means in Lomellina.
During the walk, participants can also observe the rich local flora and fauna at the height of the spring season. The route leads to Azienda Agricola Stefania Buffa Riso at Cascina Casalè di Sotto, a historic women-led farm cultivating rice for three generations.
Here, agricultural tradition meets conviviality.
Surrounded by farm animals, vintage machinery, and modern agricultural realities, participants are welcomed by the Buffa family and by the non-profit association Robbio 4.0, a local volunteer organization directly involved in preparing the lunch.
The shared meal becomes an authentic social moment where food also serves as a tool for solidarity: proceeds from the initiative are donated to social projects supporting the local community.
The lunch menu, informal yet deeply rooted in local tradition, celebrates Lomellina rice and regional specialties prepared with passion and expertise.
The rice masterclass
A major highlight of the itinerary is the exclusive masterclass led by Dr. Massimo Biloni, expert in the rice supply chain, director of Ires, and founder of Acquaverderiso — Italy’s first rice sommelier association.
Co-author of the book “Tutto un altro riso. Guida completa per sommelier del riso e appassionati”, Biloni guides participants through a sensory and educational journey exploring rice varieties, agricultural sustainability, and the deep connection between rice, water, and territory.
The masterclass represents one of the most valuable moments of the itinerary, providing practical tools to better understand and appreciate rice as an identifiable, traceable, and conscious product.
